This post serves as a great big "thank you" to everyone who supported my fund-raising efforts for the Bobbie Beganny Scholarship Fund at the Boston Marathon last month. The numbers are in and they're not bad at all...just short of $1,400. That means that the scholarship fund will be handing out more money to worthy high school seniors than ever before! The fund is run by the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce, and the Chamber did a top-notch job of organizing and facilitating the fundraiser.
Jay Sattler, CPA of BlumShapiro joined me in the fundraing effort and we both had a rough time at the race this year. After 21 marathons it was the worst weather I've ever competed in. When FEMA is considering shutting down a running event with 25,000 participants the night before the race, that's a sure sign that the weather is not ideal. But they went ahead and held the race...and Jay and I went ahead and ran the race! Knowing that our efforts would benefit such a worthy cause as the scholarship fund was the one thing that persuaded us to stick around and tough it out (about 2,500 registered runners ended up deciding otherwise). I fell well short of my time goal of 2 hours and 50 minutes which would have triggered some bonus pledges. But, in light of the weather, I was perfectly happy with my 3:04 finishing time and the fact that I didn't die from hypothermia. You can check out some not-so-pretty photos of me during the race here. Jay's shots are here.
Once again, thank you very much for your donations! I'm looking forward to supporting the scholarship fund at Boston again next year...and it's nice to know that better weather will be virtually guaranteed!
